Every so often, while browsing a showroom floor or visiting a friend, you come across a piece of furniture that has that ‘it’ quality that makes you pause for a moment and give that particular piece of furniture a second or even a third glance.

Sometimes it’s a sleek curve or radical design twist that catches your attention, or it may be the quirky functionality of a new futuristic or contemporary piece, whatever the case, these unique piece can be a welcome break from the tedium of “same old, same old” that can sometimes bog down the furniture world.

For this latest installment of the Know Your Furniture series, I thought we might take a little journey back in time and see if we can’t possibly track down the origin and outline a brief history of a particular furniture piece that seems to have been around forever. The Hammock.

No doubt we are all familiar with contemporary hammocks as they are used in the world around us today. The symbol of carefree leisure, hammocks are a fairly simple and functional concept, a piece of material slung between two trees where one might lounge in the sun or sip an iced tea on a hot day.

Sorry for the brief hiatus.

Today I thought we might take a look at a particular furniture design concept that is both innovative and unique as well as being cute and creative. I find myself particularly taken with these pieces in part due to the incredible way that the ingenuity of the design actually enhances the functionality of the furniture, whereas all too often it seems the reverse is true in many contemporary ‘outside of the box’ designs, where so many times the focus is almost exclusively on the aesthetic appeal and the piece itself seems to remain barely functional.

This is very much not the case with the furniture pictured below.

Project Zip:per – Unzipping the Full Potential of Furniture Design

Curiosity about everyday objects has become, in large part,  the most important motif to korean furniture design studio the zoom.

Their creative genius it seems, lies in their inspirational ability to reinterpret these seemingly mundane and unremarkable everyday objects, a process they refer to as ‘zoom:ing’.

‘Zoom:ing’ takes these objects and, through a combination of vision and skill, turns them into one of a kind furniture pieces that are both functional and a work of art.

In this particular scene, their recent  ‘zip:per’ project yielded a series of bookshelves,
chairs and wine racks that incorporate exaggerated zippers to provide a little humor and added function.

Unique Eco-Conscious Furniture

Hey there, hope y’all had a wonderful weekend.

Those of you who are avid readers of the Madison Seating Blog, are familiar with my obsession with all things furniture, and especially the innovative, unconventional and sometimes outrageous designs making their way into the furniture world today. Combine that with some other added element such as Eco-friendly designs made from recycled material, or some sort of bio-degradable concept and I am hooked!
