Tel Aviv-based designer Adital Ela doesn’t think so.
The dome shaped stools (and stools they are, in more ways than one…) pictured above, are made entirely of recycled agricultural waste, such as compacted earth, construction debris and certain form of, ehhem, organic waste.
The Milan Furniture Fair, or “Salone Internazionale del Mobile di Milano” in Italian, was first launched in 1961 as the largest trade fair of its kind in the world, showcasing the latest in furniture and design from countries around the world.
The Salone del Mobile, which opened this year this past Tuesday at the Rho fairground and will close Sunday, is rooted in the expansion of Italian manufacturing during the golden era of “la dolce vita” in the 1950s and 1960s, when visionary industrialists collaborated with talented designers to develop technically innovative products in an elegant, modern style.
The current show occupies an area of nearly 230,000 square metres (2,500,000 sq ft), and includes 2,500 companies, along with 700 young designers at the Salone Satellite, a secondary satellite exhibit. About 338,000 people attended the fair in 2012, more than in 2011, but less than 2008’s record of 383,793 visitors.

Many of the posts on this blog center around the idea of furniture as an art form or novelty piece. And while there may be nothing a true furniture connoisseur enjoys more than a novel concept or design, I’m sure even the most enthusiastic amongst us would agree that the real priority in every furniture design should be the improved comfort and lifestyle of the person in question. Especially when it comes to the future furniture enthusiasts of the world, and indeed the very future of our world in general, our children.
In today’s post I would like to take a moment to salute the work of the Perch Company, an inventive design house that has received international recognition for their work in health positive school furniture design. Their commitment to the improvement of the health and quality of life for our children in schools across the world is both obvious and heartwarming.
When I was (much) younger, I went through a stage where I was convinced that all the world was some sort of conspiratorial combination of holographic image or hallucination, and that if I were to leave one room and walk into the next, then the room I had just left would completely disappear and anything or anyone who happened to be inside would cease to exist.
I call it the the Truman Show effect.
I think we may all, at one point or another, go through a stage where we wonder if our entire existence might not just be the product of some elaborate hoax, as some ethereal figure manipulates the world around us to fool us into thinking that we are interacting with a world that in truth is really just an endless treadmill surrounded by holographic projectors.
